COLORSTEEL® MAXX™+
Colour For The Extreme
COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ is built tough and designed smart for great looks that last. With a choice of exciting designer colours from the subtle to the dramatic, COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ prepainted steel has drawn from New Zealand’s environment to reflect the hues of nature.
From snow covered mountains to the demands of the beach, the COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ prepainted steel colour range complements these environments and uses a new Super Polyester paint – coating technology that’s proven to look newer for longer.
COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ prepainted steel is made touch to withstand harsh New Zealand conditions. One of the most demanding of building environments is the rugged coastline.
High concentrations of salt in the atmosphere challenge all but the toughest building materials. COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ prepainted steel has been specifically developed for buildings erected 100m from surf beaches on the West Coast.
A ZINCALUME® alloy coating is applied to the steel of each COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ prepainted steel sheet. The zinc and aluminium in the ZINCALUME® steel coating combine to provide both stable corrosion protection overall and galvanic protection on cut edges. In conjunction with the primer and top paint coats, this means the investment in your new roof will be assured for many years to come.
Limitations Of Use
COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ products are designed for use in the very severe environment, greater than 100m from the West Coast. Before using COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ products near sources of industrial pollution or in geothermal areas, consult the Technical Manager at Taranaki Steelformers.
COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ products should not be used in the following applications:
- Embedded in concrete
- In contact with permanently wet materials
- Water tanks
- In contact with soil, bark or similar
- As concrete formwork
- In intensive animal shelters
Copper or Brass pipes must not be allowed to discharge onto COLORSTEEL® prepainted steel products or be allowed to come into contact with them. The use of other materials in proximity to COLORSTEEL® prepainted steel must be in accordance with the New Zealand Steel Specifiers and Builders Guide.
Mixing of brands of prepainted material on the same building is not recommended by New Zealand Steel Limited. Marking with lead pencils is not advised, and sealing washers should be low carbon non-conducting. Refer to the New Zealand Steel Installers Guide under the ‘Marking, Cutting and Drilling’ section.
COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™+
The Natural Choice
The hues of nature have determined our response to colour. Red based tones remind us of sunshine, earth and fire – so we think of them as warm and inviting. Blues are considered cool and refreshing, greens are restful and reminiscent of leafy glades and luxuriant growth. Sand spans the colours of the seaside to the richer desert hues. There is also the comfort of the stone colours that offer security and strength.
To our personal preference we add the ingredients of environment, situation and interaction of design when making a new roof colour choice. A COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ prepainted steel roof reflects these hues of nature.
To the steel core of each COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ prepainted steel sheet, a remarkable coating called ZINCALUME® has been applied. The zinc and aluminium in this ZINCALUME® steel coating combine together to provide both stable corrosion protection overall and galvanic protection on cut edges. In conjunction with the primer and top paint coats, this means the investment in your new roof will be assured for many years to come.
COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ prepainted steel products can be used in all moderate to severe environmental conditions within New Zealand. For those very exposed coastal conditions or in very severe industrial or geothermal areas, please seek advice from a Taranaki Steelformers representative.
Limitations Of Use
COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ products are not recommended for use in very severe environments, i.e. within 100m of breaking surf or corrosive industrial emissions. (Very severe marine environments are characterised by heavy salt deposits and the almost constant smell of salt spray in the air.) Refer to New Zealand Steel’s Environmental Categories Guide for further information on the definition of corrosive environments. (For very severe environments, COLORSTEEL® MAXX ™ material may be suitable). Before using COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ products near sources of industrial pollution or in geothermal areas, consult the Technical Manager at Taranaki Steelformers.
COLORSTEEL® ENDURA™ products should not be used in the following applications:

The reaction between ZINCALUME® steel and lead flashings will degrade the ZINCALUME® steel material. Soft zinc or aluminium flashings should be used. Marking with lead pencils is not advised, and sealing washers should be low carbon non-conducting. Refer to the New Steel Installers Guide under the ‘Marking, Cutting and Drilling’ section.
ZINCALUME®+
New Zealand Steel Limited introduced ZINCALUME®, zinc/aluminium alloy coated steel, to the New Zealand market in 1994. ZINCALUME® coated steel represents a significant improvement on the traditional zinc coated galvanised steel. Since its introduction, ZINCALUME® coated steel has been widely accepted and has the major share of the steel building products market.
The ZINCALUME® coated steel has been formulated to give a significantly longer service life than a galvanised coating. This is of particular value in New Zealand where the prevailing winds carry corrosive salt laden air many kilometres inland.
The ZINCALUME® steel coating combines the corrosion protection of aluminium with the sacrificial protection of zinc, giving the advantages of both metals. The resulting alloy coating enhances corrosion resistance, making it ideal for such applications as roofing and cladding.
ZINCALUME® coated steel is produced by a continuous hot dip process similar to that used to manufacture galvanised steel. While both ZINCALUME® steel and galvanised steel products have a steel base, galvanised steel has a coating of 100% zinc, whereas ZINCALUME® coated steel has an alloy coating of 43.5% zinc, 55% aluminium and 1.5% silicon.
In almost all applications, ZINCALUME® coated steel will out-perform galvanised steel. There are however, a small number of applications for which galvanised steel is more suitable.
Limitations Of Use
ZINCALUME® coated steel must not be used for:
- Formwork in contact with wet concrete
- Products to be embedded in concrete. However, where very small volumes of concrete are involved (e.g. splashes) which are able to cure quickly, there is little corrosive effect.
- Animal shelters where ammonia levels are constantly high.
- Fertilizer storage sheds and containers.
- Culverts, or where ZINCALUME® coated steel material is buried in the ground
- Water tanks.
- Highly alkaline environments (e.g. cement manufacture).
- Coolroom products.
GALVSTEEL®+
Galvanised steel is mild steel with a coating of zinc. The zinc protects the steel by providing cathodic protection to the exposed steel, so should the surface be damaged the zinc will corrode in preference to the steel. Galvanised steel is one of the most widely used products, used extensively in the building sector, automotive, agricultural and other areas where the steel needs to be protected from corrosion.
Taranaki Steelformers continues to roll-form GALVSTEEL® in our four roofing profiles so that any roof repair or patch work on existing galvanised roofs can be done. GALVSTEEL® is not advised for any new roof or cladding project however, it is the most suited material for intensive animal shelters. Please talk to the Taranaki Steelformers Technical Manager to discuss your project and to determine whether GALVSTEEL® is suitable for your application.
COLORCOAT®+
ColorCote® products use technologically advanced coating systems and are available on either steel or aluminium substrates to suit innovative architectural design or New Zealand’s most demanding climatic environment.
Taranaki Steelformers does not stock a full range of COLORCOAT® products. However, some products can be sourced as required. Please contact a representative from Taranaki Steelformers for more information on the COLORCOAT® range and how it can add value to your project.
